Broad-tailed Hummingbird, Cape May, NJ

This Broad-tailed Hummingbird was positively identified today.  Notice the dark tail, dark undertail smudges, green vest, relativelly short straight bill and the gorget feathers.
Congratulations to Michael O'Brien for identifying this properly as the first state record for NJ.  (Pending review)

Black-browed Albatross - Hatteras, NC

This adult Black-browed Albatross flew into the wake of the Stormy Petrel II, February 18, 2012 at around 4:30 pm - 1 mile from Hatteras Inlet.  There are only a few accepted records for this species in the western Atlantic.
Comparison with an adult Herring Gull in flight.

Not a bad day after seeing Great Skua on a few occasions!  A full page will follow.

The Big Year

I have to apologize for the continued delay of the big year. The first big year competition hosted on this website started on July 1, 2008 and was followed by a second big year which ended on June 30, 2010. The competition was based on data that was input into the eBird database. I have every intention on resuming the competition, but I'm trying to migrate the programming code into a new language and a new database. This, along with the recent taxonomic changes have proven to be a difficult process. (Initially, the application was run on PHP code using MySQL as a database and currently the server is running on ASP.NET 4.0 using Microsoft SQL.)
